Northern Ireland vs Austria: Blank night in store for dead rubber

Northern Ireland vs Austria Match Preview and Predictions

Northern Ireland were relegated from League B of the Nations League on Thursday when Austria and Bosnia-Herzegovia drew 0-0 in Vienna.

On the same night, Michael O'Neill's men shared a goalless draw of their own against the Republic of Ireland, a scoreline we predicted in a clean sweep of tips for that game.

Austria's failure to win on Thursday means they can no longer be promoted to the top tier and even a defeat against Northern Ireland in Belfast will not displace them from second place in Group 3.

Northern Ireland vs Austria Betting Tips

Here are our best tips for Sunday's match for which we also have a range of other markets available:

The lowdown

Northern Ireland conclude their Nations League campaign against Austria with both teams having scored just once in their three games.

Austria's only goal came against Northern Ireland in October when Marko Arnautovic beat the offside trap to slot home the winner although Steven Davis shot wide when clean through and substitute Will Grigg struck the post with a header six minutes from time.

The Austrians dominated possession at 60% as you might expect for a home side and edged the shot count 10-8 but there was little to choose between the sides.

O'Neill prepared for this game with a friendly against neighbours Republic of Ireland and despite dominating the match the hosts failed to make the most of their few chances, with Darren Randolph making fine saves to deny Gavin Whyte and Jordan Jones either side of the break.

With nothing on the line for either side and both teams struggling in front of goal the first of our free football tips is for at least one team not to score at 4/5.

Four of the five matches in this group have involved at least one team failing to score and we're expecting another low-key affair on Sunday.

First goalscorer tips

Although we have once more predicted a goalless draw as you will discover below, the one player who can break the deadlock is Arnautovic at 9/2.

The striker has scored five goals for West Ham this season, secured the win in Vienna with a smart finish and went close to stealing a late winner against Bosnia-Herzegovina when his shot cleared the bar.

Anytime goalscorer tips

With few or no goals expected, it might be worth looking at one of the outsiders to nab a goal and with that in mind we've picked out Craig Cathcart at 12/1 as our anytime goalscorer tip.

The central defender has two goals in 40 appearances for his country and bagged the winner for Watford against Tottenham a couple of months ago.

Where the game will be won or lost

The draw at the Aviva Stadium was a case of deja vu for Northern Ireland who have been dominating possession but spurning opportunities in recent games.

O'Neill said: "We did have to do some defending, but it was mainly set-pieces and free-kicks we gave away around the box. In terms of possession of the ball and chances created we should have won the game.

"Overall I'm pleased with the performance. Again the pattern is similar to games we've played in the Nations League. We were dominant, very dominant but we didn't take the chances, but we created a lot.''

The Northern Ireland manager has repeatedly stated he is unconcerned by relegation from League B and that his main focus is developing players ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

With the game now effectively a dead rubber the next of our Nations League tips is for a draw at 21/10 and another goalless one at 15/2.

Austria have failed to score in their last two games and found the net just once in their last four, while doubts surround the participation of Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty who pulled out of last month's Nations League double header the night before he was supposed to link up with the squad.
