Bristol City vs Leeds: Winning start on cards for Whites

Bristol City vs Leeds Match Preview and Predictions

Leeds start their Championship campaign with a tough trip to Bristol City, a team they beat twice last season.

The lowdown

Leeds fans breathed a huge sigh of relief when Marcelo Bielsa agreed to stay at the club for another season, although that news was tempered by the loss of cult centre-back Pontus Jansson.

The Swedish defender was the most popular player with United supporters but says he was sold to Brentford to balance the books in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Leeds have replaced Jansson by signing Ben White on loan from Brighton and brought back Manchester City winger Jack Harrison for another spell, but the feeling remains among supporters that the squad is too small to sustain another promotion bid, especially with United's high-octane style of play.

Striker Kemar Roofe and defender Luke Ayling will miss the start of the season with ankle injuries, but a 1-1 draw against Serie A side Cagliari in their final match before Sunday's game suggests Leeds will be a force in the Championship once again.

The Yorkshire side are 9/2 favourites to win the Championship and can be tipped for a mid-table finish at 25/1.

The Robins did not manage to adequately replace Bobby Reid last season, although manager Lee Johnson is optimistic he will sign a striker before the August 8 transfer deadline.

Johnson could have around £20million to spend if Adam Webster joins Premier League outfit Brighton and the City boss has already added Kasey Palmer on a four-year deal from Chelsea three days before Sunday's match.

The Robins lost both matches against Leeds last season without scoring and we fancy the visitors to get off to a winning start at 11/8, just as they did 12 months ago when they went on an eight-match unbeaten run.

First goalscorer tips

Pablo Hernandez has had a good pre-season, scoring a wonder goal in the win against Western Sydney Warriors and bagging the equaliser from the penalty spot against Cagliari.

The Spaniard was sensational for Leeds last season and scored in the 2-0 win at Ashton Gate so looks good value at 13/2 to break the deadlock.

Feature match previews

Where the game will be won or lost

Bristol City have had a mixed pre-season, beating Wimbledon, Forest Green and American side Sarasota Metropolis, but came up short against Championship rivals Derby and concluded their preparations with a 5-0 defeat by Crystal Palace

Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva spent last season at City on loan from Chelsea but were signed on permanent deals over the summer, so Johnson has made a couple of decent additions in defence but it is in attack where they could struggle.

The Robins won just eight home games last season, scoring only 28 goals - the second fewest of the teams that finished in the top half of the table.

Leeds deservedly won this fixture 1-0 last season, courtesy of Patrick Bamford's ninth-minute winner, and the majority of those players, Jansson and Ayling aside, could be in Bielsa's starting XI on Sunday.

Despite failing to score against Leeds, Johnson's side were one of the best performers in the both teams to score table on home territory, with 14 of their 23 matches seeing goals at both ends.

Leeds conceded eight goals in the last four matches of the regular season and of course Derby put four past them at Elland Road, so the next of our Championship betting tips is for Leeds to win and both teams to score at 18/5.

We wrap up our preview by going for Draw HT/Leeds FT at 19/4, just like last season. City were drawing at half-time in 11 of their 23 home matches and in 10 of their first 15 Championship games at Ashton Gate.

Traders' Tips - View from the trading floor

Bristol City fell just short in the race for a play-off spot last season and if they can get a striker in before Sunday, they look decent value to beat Leeds in the draw no bet market.
