Burnley vs Newcastle: Defences to dominate Turf war

Burnley vs Newcastle Match Preview and Predictions

Burnley and Newcastle both enjoyed top-half finishes in the Premier League last season but are looking nervously over their shoulders after slow starts to the new campaign.

[All odds correct at time of publication]

Both teams have collected just nine points so far and went into the 13th round of Premier League fixtures just a point above the relegation zone.

Newcastle are on the up at least after back-to-back wins but both teams will see the Monday Night Football match as a fixture they can win.

Burnley vs Newcastle Betting Tips

Here are our predictions for Monday's game for which we also have a range of other markets available:

The lowdown

Newcastle remain without an away win but victories over Watford and Bournemouth at St James' Park have kick-started their season.

They have been tough to beat on their travels too, drawing three of their five matches and only losing by a single goal at Manchester City and Manchester United.

Their three draws were all goalless stalemates against teams in the bottom half of the table and this could be another tense affair at Turf Moor.

Burnley have struggled defensively, in contrast to last season, but do Newcastle have the firepower and the gameplan to take advantage?

The Clarets at least looked more solid in a 0-0 draw at Leicester prior to the international break but they offered little threat going forward as their winless run was extended to five games.

It is hard to see this being a classic and under 1.5 goals at 17/10 is the first of our Burnley vs Newcastle predictions.

First goalscorer tips

Neither team is blessed with attacking talent and on a night when a set-piece or one moment of quality could make all the difference, the BetStars Odds Boost of 13/2 for Chris Wood to score first catches the eye.

The tall New Zealand international striker was on target in Burnley's 4-2 defeat at West Ham recently and had their best chance at Leicester two weeks ago.

Anytime goalscorer tips

Ki Sung-yueng struggled to make an impact following his arrival at Newcastle from Swansea in the summer but has played a more pivotal role recently and was back in the starting line-up for the win against Bournemouth.

The South Korean showed during his time at Swansea that he has an eye for goal, with one of his goals last season coming against Burnley, and he's our pick from the anytime goalscorer odds at 6/1.

Where the game will be won or lost

Burnley have faced Newcastle four times in the last four seasons and a 1-0 win for the Clarets at Turf Moor last season was the only time there has been a winner.

That adds to the feeling that these are two well-matched teams and we're adding a draw at 41/20 to our Burnley vs Newcastle betting tips.

Burnley have failed to find the net in half of their 12 matches and Newcastle have drawn a blank five times so for punters willing to take more of a gamble, a goalless draw at 7/1 has plenty of appeal.

The Magpies have only managed nine goals and have settled for a share of the spoils in 0-0 draws at Crystal Palace, Southampton and Cardiff.

Given that Newcastle settled for a cautious approach in those games against a similar standard of opposition, we're expecting more of the same on a night when switching over to see celebrities battling with jungle critters could offer more entertainment!

Traders' Tips - View from the trading floor

This looks set to be a low-scoring game and Newcastle will make themselves tough to break down. There are some worries over Burnley's defence this season though and we're backing Newcastle to produce the one moment of quality to edge a 1-0 win and continue their revival.
