Red Star Belgrade vs Liverpool Betting Tips

Here are our best tips for the match for which we also have a range of other markets available:

The lowdown

Jurgen Klopp's side ran out comfortable 4-0 winners in the reverse fixture at Anfield two weeks ago with goals from Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah (2) and Sadio Mane earning three points for Liverpool.

That was the first meeting between the two sides in 45 years and was also Liverpool's first win over Red Star in European competition.

Victory for Liverpool last time out looked very much on the cards with odds of 1/16 to claim the win and Red Star at a hefty 35/1, but it is set to be a sterner test in the Serbian capital.

The hosts held Napoli to a goalless draw on matchday one and they have not lost at home in UEFA competition in seven matches since they fell to a 1-0 UEFA Europa League defeat to Arsenal last season.

In contrast, Liverpool have won just five of their last 20 European away matches so a Red Star double chance is a real possibility at 17/5, the first of our Champions League betting tips.

First goalscorer tips

Roberto Firmino was on target for us last time out as the first goalscorer in the reverse fixture at Anfield and we fancy him to open the scoring once again.

The Brazil international has not hit the same goalscoring heights as previous seasons, but he is always a threat in and around the penalty area and is priced at 4/1 to break the deadlock against Red Star for a second time.

Anytime goalscorer tips

Mo Salah and Sadio Mane were both on the scoresheet against the Serbs but James Milner could be someone who has a bit of value when looking at the anytime goalscorer market.

The midfielder scored the opener against Arsenal from open play at the weekend and he is also the designated penalty-taker, so should the referee point to the spot, he remains the man to take responsibility.

Where the game will be won or lost

Visiting English sides generally find it hard to break down the Red Star defence away from home but they do have a good record in Serbia.

Since the turn of the century, the home side have won only once in three European ties against English clubs - a 3-1 win over Leicester in September 2000.

Red Star have since suffered 1-0 defeats to Bolton in December 2007 and Arsenal last season. Liverpool are 8/1 to repeat the scoreline for a third time in a row, but the second free tip is erring on the side of caution.

The defeat to Arsenal was the last time Red Star have lost in any competition at home - a run of 28 competitive matches - and have scored in 25 of them, so there looks to be more value in the home side winning with a +2 handicap at 5/4.

The last of our Champions League predictions in the Red Star Belgrade vs Liverpool game is for a penalty to be awarded. Red Star gave two away at Anfield, while Liverpool also converted a spot-kick in the victory over PSG on matchday two. The referee to give another one in Belgrade is 11/5.

Team news

Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri, of Kosovar-Albanian descent, has been left at home in an attempt to reduce local hostilities. Defender Dejan Lovren (muscle) and Naby Keita (hamstring) return to the squad but fellow midfielder Jordan Henderson has remained on Merseyside for extra training sessions as he finalises his recovery from a hamstring problem.

Traders' Tips - View from the trading floor

Red Star's impressive home record mean they look good value to win with a +2 handicap against a Liverpool side that would be more than happy just to win by a single goal.
