Lyon vs Manchester City: French fancied to get result

Lyon vs Manchester City Match Preview and Predictions

Manchester City need just a point against Lyon to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League with a game to spare and victory in France will ensure they advance as group winners.

[All odds correct at time of publication]

Gabriel Jesus scored a hat-trick as City crushed Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 last time out in a match which became better known for the farcical penalty awarded to Raheem Sterling when he stubbed his toe against the turf shaping up to shoot inside the area.

Lyon conceded a last-minute equaliser against Hoffenheim for the second time earlier this month but a win against City will see them through and even a draw would be good enough if the Germans fail to beat Shakhtar.

Lyon vs Manchester City Betting Tips

The lowdown

Lyon sprang the surprise of matchday one when they won 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium courtesy of first-half goals from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir.

City bounced back with three successive victories by an aggregate score of 11-1 to top Group F by three points from Lyon, meaning qualification is almost assured.

The question is whether they will achieve their goal on Tuesday night when they take on a Lyon side that have lost just one of their last 13 matches across all competitions, a 5-0 drubbing at Ligue 1 champions PSG.

All four of Lyon's matches have involved both teams scoring and the odds on a fifth are priced at 4/7, but instead we like the double chance market on Lyon to win or draw at 19/10 as the first of our Lyon vs Manchester City predictions.

The French side were dangerous on the counter-attack in Manchester and although they conceded 70% possession, it was a disjointed display from City and we're hoping home advantage will help them to raise their game.

First goalscorer tips

Lyon have opened the scoring in all but one of their four Champions League matches and with nothing to lose we fancy them to give City a scare on Tuesday night.

Houssem Aouar is in the middle of a hot streak with three goals in four appearances and although he has yet to score in this season's Champions League, that could all change at parc Olympique Lyonnais at first goalscorer odds of 12/1.

Anytime goalscorer tips

Aymeric Laporte has chipped in with a couple of goals for City this season, including the 3-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk, and we fancy the City defender to do so again at Champions League betting odds of 17/2.

The Frenchman also hit the post with a far-post header in the 2-1 defeat against Lyon and will be keen to make amends in the reverse fixture to help send City into the round of 16.

Where the game will be won or lost

City had double the number of shots and efforts on target against Lyon and they are expected to dominate a side who are pressing for a top-three spot in Ligue 1 for the second successive season.

Lyon lost just two of their 19 home games last season though and a 1-0 defeat by Nice in August aside, have been going pretty well in the current campaign.

We expect Bruno Genesio's side to be up for a fight and think the deadlock will be broken between 21-30 minutes at 19/4 as it was at the Etihad in the next of our Lyon vs Man City tips.

The first goal has come between that period in half of the Champions League matches involving both teams and interestingly in six of Lyon's last 13 matches in all competitions.

The last of our Lyon vs Manchester City betting tips is for both teams to score in the first half at 23/10.

There have been at least two goals in three of Lyon's Champions League games in the first 45 minutes so far and although only one match has seen goals at both ends in the first half, City will want to avenge their defeat in Manchester and get qualification out of the way quickly.
