Tottenham make the long trip north to face Newcastle at St James' Park on the opening weekend of the Premier League season for the second year running.

Newcastle's first match on their return to the top flight last season got off to the worst possible start following the dismissal of Jonjo Shelvey and Spurs took advantage with second-half goals from Dele Alli and Ben Davies securing a 2-0 win.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Betting Tips

The lowdown

Tottenham did the double over Newcastle last season, following up their win on Tyneside with a 1-0 victory at Wembley in May.

There were some doubts whether Newcastle could avoid the drop when they lost their opening two games last season without scoring a goal and they will be keen to make a stronger start this time.

The Magpies recovered to finish in the top half last season and have suffered just one home defeat in 2018 so we're kicking off our Newcastle vs Tottenham predictions by backing them to win at tempting odds of 13/5.

Their run of five wins from their last six games included victories against Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea and they could catch Spurs cold here.

We're not expecting an emphatic win though so the BetStars odds boost of 4/1 for Newcastle to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 looks worth the extra risk.

Given that some of Tottenham's players may be suffering a World Cup hangover, 11/2 for Newcastle to be leading at both half-time and full-time also stands out in the Newcastle vs Tottenham odds.

First goalscorer tips

Newcastle have swapped Dwight Gayle for West Brom striker Salomon Rondon and it is a deal which should suit both clubs, with Gayle having struggled to make the step up to the Premier League.

Rondon could thrive with better service than he received with the Baggies and he can mark his debut with the first goal at 13/2.

Anytime goalscorer tips

The return of Kenedy on loan from Chelsea was an important piece of business for Newcastle, with the Brazilian playing an important role in their impressive second half of the season.

He proved a threat in front of goal when getting forward and we're backing him at 7/2 to strike here.

Where the game will be won or lost

Newcastle have a settled squad heading into the new campaign and can hit the ground running, unlike last season when they made a slow start.

Several of the Tottenham players, including star men such as Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Alli, were involved at the World Cup right through to the end and this looks a good time to be facing Mauricio Pochettino's men.

They only managed 22 points from their final 15 away games last season after starting with four wins so there are questions marks about their performances on the road.

A lunchtime kick-off in the north-east looks a tough start to the season for a squad featuring so many players who spent their summers in Russia.

Team news

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez could hand competitive debuts to a series of summer signings. Defender Fabian Schar, midfielder Ki Sung-yueng and strikers Salomon Rondon and Yoshinori Muto could feature. However, latest arrival Federico Fernandez will not be involved after only completing his move from Swansea on deadline day, and fellow defender Florian Lejeune is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery.

Pochettino will assess his World Cup stars ahead of the game. Spurs had nine players in Russia until the final weekend and they only returned to training on Monday, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris having differing levels of fitness. Victor Wanyama (knee) and Erik Lamela (thigh) will miss out with injuries picked up in pre-season.

Traders' Tips - View from the trading floor

Benitez has once again been left frustrated in the transfer window by Mike Ashley and faces a tough opening day fixture against Spurs. Tottenham will probably have a few stars on the bench here like Kane who delayed his return to training due owing to World Cup duty but should still have more than enough to account for a deflated Newcastle side who are desperate for fresh blood.
