Newcastle vs Wolves: Super Sunday stalemate on Tyneside

Newcastle vs Wolves Match Preview and Predictions

Newcastle and Wolves have both had poor spells of form this season but have shown enough recently to suggest they can stay out of relegation trouble.

The Magpies have taken 10 points from their last five matches after an impressive 1-1 draw at Everton in midweek.

Wolves produced the biggest shock of the week as they ended their recent slump by coming from behind to beat high-flying Chelsea 2-1 at Molineux.

Newcastle vs Wolves Betting Tips

Here are our predictions for Sunday's match for which we also have a range of other markets available:

The lowdown

Will the real Wolverhampton Wanderers please stand up?

The Premier League new boys have either looked like Champions League hopefuls or relegation certainties, depending which match we're looking at.

They have been played off the park at home against Watford and Huddersfield yet their victory over Chelsea was a return to the form which saw them unfortunate to only draw at Arsenal, having also drawn with leaders Manchester City and at Manchester United.

A repeat of that level of performance should be enough to return from Tyneside with all three points but it is hard to know how much faith to have in this Wolves team.

A trip to St James' Park also looks a tougher proposition than it did a few months ago. Having had to wait until November for a first win of the season, a run of three successive victories lifted the Magpies out of the relegation zone.

Neither team can be backed with huge confidence so the first of our Newcastle vs Wolves predictions is a draw at 21/10.

First goalscorer tips

Neither of these teams have a particularly prolific striker so we're happy to swerve the favourites in the first goalscorer odds.

Matt Ritchie returns from suspension for Newcastle after a one-match ban for five yellow cards and will be desperate to make an impact, with his glaring miss at Burnley still fresh in the memory.

The Scotland midfielder is yet to get off the mark this season but netted three goals in the second half of last season - all at St James' Park - and we're backing him to come good at 9/1.

Anytime goalscorer tips

Matt Doherty has been one of the stars of the season for Wolves and has already found the net in away games at Crystal Palace and Cardiff.

He can be backed at 14/1 to score first but, as we'll explain below, Newcastle look most likely to break the deadlock so instead settle for 5/1 for the wing-back to score at anytime.

Where the game will be won or lost

Wolves have produced plenty of entertainment this season but goals have been in reasonably short supply.

There have been over 2.5 goals in just four of their 15 matches - the lowest in the Premier League - and Newcastle have already been involved in three goalless draws, a tally which only Southampton can match.

We're expecting a cagey affair on Super Sunday so under 2.5 goals looks a solid selection at 6/10.

Wolves have been slow to get going this season, scoring just 20% of their goals in the first half. Newcastle, in contrast, have scored nine of their 12 goals before the break and we're taking the Magpies to win the first half 1-0 as the last of our Newcastle vs Wolves betting tips.

Traders' Tips - View from the trading floor

Salomon Rondon has played a key role in Newcastle's recent upturn in fortunes, bagging a match-winning brace against Bournemouth and earning them a point with his goal at Everton in midweek. The on-loan West Brom striker can expect some abuse from the Wolves fans but can silence them with the first goal at enhanced odds of 7/1.
