Women's World Cup predictions: USA fancied in 20/1 shot for final

The FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 ends this weekend when the holders face the European champions in Sunday's final in Lyon.

The United States are the favourites when they face the Netherlands while England will hope to secure third place against Sweden when they meet in Nice on Saturday.

We have studied the odds and have two Women's World Cup predictions for the final as well as a selection for England's third-place play-off.

Women's World Cup betting tips

United States vs Netherlands (Sun, 16:00)

The Women's World Cup odds suggested the United States were the team to beat in France and that is still the case heading into the final.

The Americans are just one win away from defending the title they won in Canada four years ago and being crowned world champions for the fourth time.

They rode their luck at times in their 2-1 semi-final victory against England, who had a goal ruled out by VAR and then had Steph Houghton's penalty saved by Alyssa Naeher.

Christen Press put the USA in front with a 10th-minute header, Ellen White levelled nine minutes later before Alex Morgan headed home what proved to be the winner just after the half-hour mark.

They will be confident of repeating their success of 2015 when they beat Japan 5-2 in the final and they are now the 2/9 favourites to retain the trophy.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, are appearing at only their second Women's World Cup finals so history is not on their side but their success at the European Championship in 2017 at least proved they can perform on the big stage.

Manchester United's Jackie Groenen scored the only goal of the 1-0 semi-final win against Sweden in the ninth minute of extra time following a tense affair.

She accepts that the Dutch are the underdogs but believes an upset is possible, saying: "Of course we watched America's game against England. They are a really strong team, and that is obvious.

"But it is one game and there are possibilities. I hope we will be able to play our own game, and who knows what will happen?

"It is amazing to be in the final. I am so proud. It is so nice to be part of a team with so much confidence that we give to each other. The final will be difficult, but it really will be incredible to win."

The Americans have certainly not looked as dominant during the knockout stage as they were in their group games when they scored 18 goals without conceding.

They have failed to keep a clean sheet during the knockout stage and have looked vulnerable in defence but in Morgan they have the joint top scorer at the Women's World Cup, while Megan Rapinoe is just one behind with five goals in four matches.

That firepower should give them the edge and the first of our Women's World Cup predictions is the USA to win and over 2.5 goals at 27/20.

For bigger odds, the RequestABet price of 20/1 for a 1-1 draw at half-time and the USA to win 2-1 looks worth a punt.

The Americans have won 2-1 in all three of their knockout games and the same bet would have paid out against Spain.

England vs Sweden (Sat, 16:00)

Both teams must bounce back quickly from their disappointment in the semi-finals if they are to clinch third place in Saturday's play-off.

England will still be rueing the manner of their defeat to the United States, having twice looked like they were set to draw level in the second half.

Sweden's semi-final went to extra time before they were finally broken down by the Dutch and fatigue could be a factor, especially with England having played 24 hours earlier.

England have kept four clean sheets at the Women's World Cup while Sweden have only managed three goals in their last four games having failed to find the net against both the United States and the Netherlands.

For the last of our Women's World Cup predictions, we'll back Phil Neville's team to end on a high and win 1-0 at 13/2.

If we get half the excitement of the United States' 2-1 win against England, the final should be an exciting affair. Jill Scott's side have won all their knockout games by a 2-1 scoreline, while the Netherlands have won eight of their last nine matches inside 90 minutes, the exception being their semi-final victory over Sweden which they won in extra time. The USA are the favourites, but a draw looks excellent value at 16/5.
